Last year, around this time, we noticed a shiny black speck on Bean's nose. Squinting, I moved closer to her and the spot sprang into action, bounding from her nose, to the white fur on her neck. A few more defiant jumps out of the little bugger, and I was able to capture it to reveal its true identity. Yep, just as I thought, we had FLEAS! I'm convinced it was a hitchhiker from the dog's stay at the local pet hotel, since we have always been consistent with administering monthly flea & tick preventative treatments. Either way, it took dozens of baths, countless loads of laundry, endless vacuuming, and a good amount of swearing before the flea infestation was a thing of our past! I vowed that I would do everything in my power to prevent this from happening again, which is why we were so happy to try products from Only Natural Pet!
We recently received an Ultimate Flea & Tick Kit from our friends at Only Natural Pet. The kits (which are currently on sale) include a huge collection of items that will help to naturally prevent and repel fleas and ticks! I’m going to share information on the products we've tried. We have used many, which we will disclose, but cannot determine the efficacy for some items that are intended to be used for a longer period that we have utilized them.
The two items that we used as soon as the box was opened was the EasyDefense Herbal Shampoo and Conditioner. While we haven’t seen any creepy crawlers on the pups yet this season, these products also help to prevent fleas and ticks from being tempted to hop on for a free and tasty ride. The organic shampoo and conditioner is chemical, pesticide and sulfate free and is safe to use on dogs and cats of all ages, including puppies and kittens (not that they necessarily want a bath, but they’re mighty cute when they go for a dip)!
The contents for the Only Natural Pet EasyDefense shampoo and conditioner include a myriad of herbs and essential oils that naturally prevent fleas and ticks. Lemongrass, citronella, and patchouli are a few of the essential oils, which also means that your pup or cat will smell amazing after their bath. As you can see, both Yoda and Bean participated in their Only Natural Pet “spa” treatment. They still smell great and their fur is super shiny. Their bath was two weeks ago! While we can’t presume that their lack of fleas and ticks is entirely attributed to use of the shampoo and conditioner, I feel confident that this all natural duo has helped in our prevention methods.
So what else does this fun pack include? The answer is a TON of products! There’s a tag that you can attach to your dog’s regular collar. Instead of chemicals, it uses your pet’s own energy to send out frequencies that repel pests! How cool and futuristic! Not only is this all natural and chemical free, it lasts for 12 months! Both Bean and Yoda use harnesses since they are brachiocephalic (ye olde smoooooshy faced pups). We have started using a collar for Bean when we go outside which includes the tag, but we continue to attach the leash to her harness.
If your dog doesn’t have a collar, you can get one that also repels pests and lasts for up to four months. This collar uses a geranium extract along with peppermint and thyme oil to keep away fleas and ticks. Note, if you already have a flea and tick problem, the collar and the tag alone won’t fix the problem. There is another natural product that is included that will be instrumental in removing a current infestation. The item that will address a current flea problem is the EasyDefense All-in-One Flea Remedy powder.
Other products that are included in the kit include: Barrier Bites, Herbal Squeeze-on, Herbal Oil Blend, and Herbal Spray. The Barrier Bites protect your pet from within. It’s a turkey flavored soft chew that includes brewer’s yeast and garlic to create a barrier around your pet! Both Bean and Yoda have tried and love the “treats.”
Herbal Squeeze-OnThe resembles the medicated tubes you typically see pet owners use to administer on their medicated flea and tick preventative. Unlike those items, which can be harmful to pets and can include pesticides, these squeeze tubes have a combination of geranium extract and peppermint that can repel fleas, ticks, and even mosquitoes from your dog! The Herbal Oil Blend is sort of an added boost that you can administer, particularly when you know you’ll be outdoors for long periods, like on a hike (see Bean's photo below) or a day at the lake.
